Basket Making Bootcamp

The Basketry Holiday Bootcamp is a fun, hands-on creative arts training designed to introduce school children to the art of making useful and beautiful products from natural and recycled materials. Through guided practical sessions, learners explore basic weaving techniques, develop creativity and fine-motor skills, and create their own basketry projects while learning about Kenyan craft traditions and entrepreneurship.

What Will Students Learn?

During the Basketry Holiday Bootcamp, students will learn practical skills through fun, hands-on activities:

• Introduction to Basketry – Understand what basketry is, its history, uses, and importance in Kenyan culture.
• Tools & Materials – Identify and safely use basic basketry tools and materials, including natural and recycled materials.
• Preparing Materials – Learn how to select, prepare, cut, arrange, and handle weaving materials.
• Basic Weaving Techniques – Practice techniques such as coiling, plaiting, twining, and over-and-under weaving.
• Basket Making – Learn how to start, shape, strengthen, and finish a simple basket.
• Creative Design & Decoration – Explore colors, patterns, textures, and decorative techniques to make unique products.
• Recycling & Environmental Awareness – Discover how every day and recycled materials can be transformed into useful crafts.
